In a significant boost for educational innovation, Copenhagen-based AI startup Alice has raised €4.2 million in funding to advance its mission of revolutionizing personalized learning. Launched in 2024, Alice leverages cutting-edge artificial intelligence to create a tailored educational experience, adapting to each learner’s unique needs and preferences. The platform’s rapid growth and visionary approach are setting a new standard for supplementary education worldwide.
Alice’s core mission is to empower users to expand their knowledge and acquire new skills in a stress-free, effective manner. By employing machine learning and real-time feedback, the platform customizes content to suit individual learning paces, prior knowledge, and preferred study styles. “Students today need far more than traditional textbooks,” says Kim Rants, Alice’s CEO and co-founder. “Alice acts as a comprehensive assistant, tutor, and mentor, guiding learners every step of the way.” Rants, a seasoned educator from Copenhagen Business School, partnered with Oxford-educated AI expert Patrick Gadd to develop this transformative model.
The platform allows users to upload their study materials—such as lecture notes, presentations, or assignments—which Alice’s AI then converts into personalized study guides, interactive quizzes, and tailored exercises. A standout feature, reminiscent of language-learning app Duolingo, is the “Study with Friends” option, enabling students to share resources and track progress collaboratively. This social element fosters engagement and motivation, making learning a more dynamic and connected experience.
Since its inception, Alice has expanded to 10 countries, achieving an impressive 650% increase in its user base within just four months. The startup’s ethical and innovative approach has garnered praise, notably from former Danish Minister of Higher Education and Science Tommy Ahlers, who views Alice as “a uniquely European approach to ethical AI in education.” The recent €4.2 million funding round, led by Cherry Ventures and Y Combinator, with support from PSV Tech and angel investors from the US and Europe, underscores the confidence in Alice’s potential to redefine education.
Looking ahead, Alice plans to refine its AI algorithms, forge deeper partnerships with educational institutions, and expand its global reach, starting with Europe and the US. By creating an inclusive, adaptive, and engaging learning environment, Alice is not only addressing the diverse needs of modern students but also positioning itself as a leader in the global EdTech landscape.
