
Research findings have come to the conclusion that children or adults with disabilities like mental retardation, hearing impairments, emotional disturbances, speech and language impairments, visual impairments, deafness, blindness can be taught in the regular classroom along with the normal peers. However this objective can be attained with the help of special education teacher.
Special education teacher is one who is well educated and trained in designing special school curriculum for the disable children. Disabled children have their own special needs. They have their own educational, physical and emotional problems and requirements. Special education teachers are the ones who know how to handle these problems. With the help of educational degree and training on special education he/she can handle special teaching equipments and materials and various intervening methods that are required for imparting special education to the children with disabilities.
Special education is not all about teaching class room curriculum. It aims at developing behavioral, emotional and social skills in disable children so that they can cope and feel comfortable in any social settings, and become aware of socially acceptable behavior. Besides imparting education and various life skills, special education teachers also provide students with career counseling.
Though children with severe disabilities can only be taught some of the life’s basic skills however they cannot be taught in the regular classroom. Severely disabled children need assistance for every work they do. While mild and moderately disabled person can be taught in the regular classroom. Inclusion and mainstreaming methods are commonly used by special education teachers nowadays in which disabled children are being given education in the same class room along with the normal children. In inclusion method of teaching, half of the day is utilized for special education and the rest of the day is used for imparting education based on normal classroom curriculum.
The second method is main streaming. In this method, children with special needs are educated along with normal developing peers for specific period of time based on their skills. Mainstreaming is geared towards students who require significant support and who are unsuccessful in a regular classroom.
